Award-Winning Coastal Dog Photography in Kent: Winning the Savvy Sea Dog Category
Dashing on the Rocks by Conor Kerrigan
As a Kent Dog Photographer, I find that every now and then a photograph comes along that means a little bit more than the rest. Not because it's technically perfect or meticulously planned, but because it tells a story.
I'm delighted to share that my photograph of my own dog, Marley, won the Savvy Sea Dog category in this year's East Kent Coast Photography Competition. It's an achievement I'm incredibly proud of, not only because it's an award for my photography, but because the competition celebrates responsible dog ownership and helps raise awareness of the incredible wildlife that shares our coastline.
It's a reminder that great dog photography can do more than create beautiful artwork. It can also inspire people, support worthwhile causes and encourage us all to look after the places we love to explore with our dogs.
From Calendar Sample to Award-Winning Photograph
One of my favourite things about this story is that the photograph wasn't originally taken for the competition at all.
It was created as a sample image for the winners of my 2026 Save Our Rescue Calendar Contest.
Each year, the calendar winners receive a complimentary professional dog photography session, and I wanted to showcase the different styles of location available. Alongside woodland and urban sessions, I offered a series of stunning coastal dog photography sessions around Kent's beautiful beaches and cliffs.
Marley, as usual, was more than happy to help.
We headed to the coast to create a collection of promotional images that demonstrated what clients could expect from a luxury portrait session by the sea. The goal was simple: create timeless portraits that celebrated the landscape while allowing a dog's personality to shine through.
At the time, I never imagined one of those photographs would go on to win a regional photography competition.
It just goes to show that some of the best images happen when you're creating naturally rather than chasing awards.

What Is the Savvy Sea Dog Competition?
The East Kent Coast Photography Competition is organised by Bird Wise East Kent in partnership with the Thanet Coast Project.
The competition encourages photographers to celebrate Kent's spectacular coastline while highlighting the importance of protecting the wildlife that calls it home.
The category I entered was called Savvy Sea Dog, with the brief:
"Showing a dog owner and/or their Savvy Sea Dog demonstrating good coastal conduct."
As someone who spends countless hours photographing dogs on beaches across Kent, this immediately resonated with me.
The coast is one of my favourite places to photograph dogs. The open spaces, dramatic skies, golden sunsets and sweeping landscapes create incredible opportunities for luxury dog photography. But it's also home to fragile habitats and protected bird species that deserve our respect.
Finding the balance between enjoying these beautiful places and protecting them is something every responsible dog owner should strive for.
Why Responsible Dog Ownership Matters
Kent's coastline is one of the most diverse and important wildlife habitats in the country.
Many species of birds rely on these beaches, dunes and salt marshes for nesting, feeding and resting during migration. Unfortunately, even the friendliest dogs can unintentionally disturb wildlife if they're allowed to roam in sensitive areas.
That's why organisations like Bird Wise East Kent do such valuable work.
Rather than discouraging people from visiting the coast with their dogs, they help owners understand how to enjoy these spaces responsibly. Through education, awareness campaigns and practical dog training, they encourage simple habits that protect wildlife while still allowing dogs to have a fantastic day out.
It's a message I wholeheartedly support.
As a professional dog photographer in Kent, I'm privileged to work in some of the county's most beautiful outdoor locations. Looking after those places isn't just important for photographers; it's essential for everyone who wants future generations to enjoy them too.
Receiving the Award
On Friday 17th July, I attended the awards ceremony where I was presented with a beautiful glass trophy and certificate.
Seeing my photograph recognised alongside so many talented photographers was a genuine honour.
Winning any photography award is incredibly rewarding, but this one felt especially meaningful because it celebrated something bigger than photography itself.
Knowing that an image of Marley could help encourage responsible dog ownership while supporting conservation efforts made the achievement even more special.
Displayed Across the Kent Coast
Perhaps the most exciting part of winning is knowing the photograph will continue to make a difference long after the competition has finished.
My winning image is now on display in galleries across Kent's coastline throughout the summer, where any visitors will have the opportunity to see it.
The photograph will also feature on postcards and in the 2027 Bird Wise East Kent calendar, helping to raise funds and awareness for Bird Wise East Kent and the Thanet Coast Project.
As a local photographer, it's incredibly rewarding to know that a photograph created right here in Kent will help promote both responsible dog ownership and the conservation of our coastline.
Meet Marley
Anyone who's followed my photography for a while will already know Marley.
He's my own dog, my most patient model and my favourite photography companion.
Over the years he's joined me on countless early morning adventures, woodland walks, beach trips and location scouting missions across Kent.
He's helped me test new cameras, experiment with lighting techniques and refine my approach to photographing dogs naturally.
Most importantly, he reminds me exactly why I became a Pet Photographer in the first place.
Every dog has their own unique personality.
The best photographs aren't about perfect poses—they're about capturing that personality in a genuine and authentic way.
Marley has taught me that lesson time and time again.

Why Coastal Dog Photography Is So Popular
When clients ask me where they should have their dog's portrait session, the coast is always one of my favourite recommendations.
Kent has some of the most spectacular beaches and coastal landscapes in the UK, offering an incredible variety of backdrops throughout the year.
Whether it's dramatic white cliffs, colourful sunsets, wide sandy beaches or rugged coastal paths, every location offers something different.
Dogs also tend to relax quickly by the sea.
They can explore, sniff, paddle in the shallows and simply enjoy themselves, allowing me to capture natural expressions rather than forced poses.
That's why my coastal sessions remain one of the most popular options for owners looking for luxury dog photography in Kent.
More Than Just Beautiful Pictures
While awards are wonderful recognition, they're never the reason I pick up my camera.
Photography is about preserving memories.
It's about celebrating the bond between people and their dogs.
It's about creating artwork that reminds us of the adventures we've shared together.
Winning the Savvy Sea Dog category is something I'll always be proud of, but what makes me happiest is knowing the photograph continues to support such an important message.
If it encourages even a handful of people to think more carefully about protecting our wildlife while enjoying the coast with their dogs, then it's achieved something far greater than winning a trophy.
Looking Ahead
This award has already inspired me to start thinking about next year's competition.
I'm sure Marley will once again volunteer as chief assistant, and we'll be back exploring more of Kent's beautiful coastline in search of another special moment. Though I also have a plethora of portraits of clients’ dogs taken on Kent’s coastline that would no doubt be award-worthy.
Until then, I'd like to thank Bird Wise East Kent, the Thanet Coast Project, the judges and everyone involved in organising such a fantastic competition.
It's been a privilege to be part of it.
And, of course, thank you to Marley for always being willing to stand in front of my camera.
I couldn't ask for a better model.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where do your coastal dog photography sessions take place?
I photograph dogs at a variety of beautiful coastal locations across Kent, choosing the best beach or cliff-top setting based on the time of year, lighting conditions and your dog's personality.
Can any dog have a beach photoshoot?
Absolutely. Whether your dog loves racing through the waves or prefers a quiet stroll along the shoreline, sessions are tailored to suit their confidence, age and mobility.
Do I need my dog to be off lead?
Not at all. Many of my photographs are taken with dogs safely on a lead, and it is then professionally removed during retouching where appropriate. Your dog's safety and the protection of local wildlife always come first.
Do you photograph outside East Kent?
Yes. While I'm based in Kent and photograph throughout East Kent regularly, I'm happy to travel across the county for portrait sessions.
Can I book woodland or urban sessions instead?
Of course. Alongside coastal sessions, I also offer woodland and urban portrait experiences, or even studio sessions in the comfort of your own home, allowing you to choose the setting that best reflects your dog's personality.
